What is meant by irrigation?

The process of applying a controlled amount of water or required quantity of water to the plants at specified or periodic interval of time is called irrigation. This process is an integral part of agriculture that keeps the farm land moist for the plants to grow and also solves the problem of dry areas which lack proper rainfall.

What is Biofertilizer?

It is consisting of living cells or latent cells of efficient strains of microorganisms that help plants growth obtain nutrients through their interaction in the rhizosphere when seeds are planted through the soil. Biofertilizer directly increase soil fertility by adding nutrients through the synthesis of environmental nitrogen fixers, phosphorus soluble and plant growth promoting substances.

When and how to harvest saffron?

The saffron bloom occurs during October- November and the flowers should be picked before the wilting of the petals. The plucking should always be done at dawn to extract the highest quality of saffron. Stigmas are borne in the centre of each purple and cup shaped bloom. The perfect time to harvest the stigmas is mid-morning on a sunny day when the flowers are fully opened and are still fresh. Carefully pluck the stigmas from the flowers with your fingers, and then dry them in a warm place to preserve them for cooking.

How seed treatment is done in SRI method of rice cultivation?

Healthy and pure seeds are used for seed treatment. Soak the seeds for about 12 hours in water, then drain the water and treat the seeds by using Bavistin (2gm/kg seed) or Trichoderma (3 gm/kg seed). There after transfer the treated seeds to a water-soaked gunny bag and leave it for 24 hours. Then, sprouted seeds are taken to the nursery for sowing seed. Divide the seed into 4 parts and broadcast thinly over the bed or each part at a time to ensure uniform broadcasting. Also, it is better to broadcast seeds in the evening.
